Starting Over in a New Country

A few weeks ago, I was delivering a group session as part of the leadership program in a global company.
It was the first session we meet with leaders as a group, participants were from every corner of the world; working in the same organization but most of them meeting first time.
After introducing ourselves, I realised I wasn’t the only one living in a different country as an expat or immigrant. Many were, quietly navigating similar transitions.
I shared my story; how I moved between countries in my life, started from scratch, rebuilt my network and tried to redefine who I was in a completely new environment. I talked about the #courage it takes to start again, as an adult (and as a woman carrying many hats) with a full life behind you.
One participant said something that hit deeply:
❣️ “You feel invisible in rooms where back home you used to shine.”
That sentence captures a truth many of us carry silently...
Someone else shared how lonely she feels even though her office is full of people “just like her.” How she felt disconnected, like she was living two separate lives: the one she presents at work and the one she carries inside.
This is the part we don’t often discuss.
❗Starting again... as a human being, not just as a professional... It really takes emotional strength. You leave behind familiarity, community, status, identity… and you rebuild, layer by layer.
🔥 You question yourself more.
✨ You doubt whether you belong.
🔑 And you search for connection in places where everyone seems busy, settled or already rooted...
But here’s what I keep learning:
🧡 When we share our stories, we find each other.
🎉 When we speak honestly, we create space for others to do the same...
⭐ And when we acknowledge the loneliness, the fear, the uncertainty, it becomes a little lighter for everyone in the room.
To anyone who has moved countries, changed environments or is trying to find their place again: your struggle is real, but so is your strength 💪
Starting over doesn’t make you less... it expands you (Even speaking a language that is not your native one every day shows just how strong you are🧡 )
And you are not as alone as you think...
Expat coaching also helps you remember your strenghts to navigate change during this time.
