Corporate life vs your own business; both has pros and cons

Having your own business = playing tennis between meetings 🎾🙂

I shared this on my Instagram story this morning, and it made me think about how much I’ve gained from choosing this path. I wanted to share it here, too, in case it inspires some of you.

There are so many changes in life: leaving a corporate job to start your own business, moving to another country, getting married, becoming a parent…

Most of the time, these changes are scary.

Not only because we resist change, but also because every new beginning comes with a little grief for what we leave behind.

For me, giving up my corporate career was scary, too.

Leaving behind my monthly salary, a beautiful office with a stunning view, and the confidence that came with introducing myself using a business card bearing the name and logo of a well-known global organisation…

It was a big step into the unknown.

But here I am, 13 years into running my own business, looking back at how much I’ve gained along the way comparing corporate life vs entrepreneurship.

💛 Flexibility to organise my day around my priorities… yes, even playing tennis between meetings!

💛 The opportunity to earn directly from the work I do (although the flip side is that when I take a break, I may not earn 😉).

💛 Stronger time-management and decision-making skills.

💛 More resilience, adaptability and confidence in navigating uncertainty.

💛 And, above all, the freedom to shape my own journey and keep discovering what I’m capable of.

I have learned so much, experienced so much, and grown in ways I probably couldn’t have imagined when I first started.

Looking back, I am proud of every step, every challenge, every mistake and every lesson.

Sometimes, the hardest part of change isn’t what we’re moving towards. It’s letting go of what we already know.

And while it is perfectly natural to grieve what we leave behind, we shouldn’t forget to be curious about what we might gain.

So, if you’re standing at the beginning of a new chapter and feeling scared, perhaps the question isn’t “What am I going to lose?”

Maybe it’s also worth asking:

🎉 “What could I gain that I can’t even imagine yet?”
