When a Bigger Organisation Doesn't Mean Bigger Growth: Rethinking Career Success

What if moving from a bigger organisation to a smaller one is not a step backwards, but a step towards greater impact?
Recently, I was coaching a client facing a challenging career decision.
On one side, there is a position in a global organisation: a reputable brand, a good salary, financial security and a well-established system.
Yet, there is something missing.
⚡️The opportunity to learn.
⚡️The opportunity to use the skills developed throughout a career.
⚡️The opportunity to lead, influence and create something meaningful.
On the other side, there is a slightly smaller, less globally recognised organisation. One that offers the opportunity to shape a culture, influence others through leadership, use existing strengths and continue growing.
But with that opportunity comes a trade-off: potentially lower external recognition and a less familiar sense of credibility in the market.
And this is where the real dilemma begins.
❓How much of our professional identity is attached to the name of the organisation we work for?
When we operate within a well-established system, it can become difficult to see what lies beyond it.
We become familiar with its structures, its reputation and its way of working. We feel secure. We know how to navigate it.
And sometimes, without realising it, we stop growing.
The comfort of a well-functioning system can be incredibly difficult to give up… unless circumstances force us to leave.
💜 I experienced something similar at one point in my own career.
Leaving a well-established corporate environment felt like a huge step. Looking back today, I can see how much that transition gave me.
It helped me become more resilient.
It expanded my understanding of the world outside the corporate system.
It allowed me to develop skills I might never have discovered otherwise.
And it gave me the opportunity to grow in ways I could not have anticipated.
What felt like a loss of status at the time eventually became an opportunity to redefine my own value.
🎯Sometimes, stepping away from what looks bigger from the outside allows us to become bigger on the inside.
Perhaps the question is not only:
“What am I giving up if I leave?”
But also:
“What am I no longer becoming if I stay?”
Because workplace culture is not only about the environment we work in.
It is also about the environment we are able to create, the people we influence and the person we become while working there.
❓ How does it resonate with you?
